What to see in the Marquês de Pombal neighborhood
Marquês de Pombal Monument

This 36-meter-tall monument, built between 1917 and 1934, depicts the Marquês de Pombal standing atop a column with his hand resting on a lion, the classic symbol of power.
One curious detail is that Pombal's gaze is directed toward the Baixa, one of Lisbon's most important neighborhoods and the city center, the area he rebuilt. At the base, you can see allegorical figures representing all the reforms he championed.
Also notable are the stone blocks and waves commemorating the earthquake and tsunami of 1755, as well as the surrounding cobblestones decorated with a mosaic of Lisbon's coat of arms.

Parque Eduardo VII
This beautiful park, with French-style gardens, is the largest in Lisbon. A visit here wouldn't be complete without climbing up to the viewpoint, which offers stunning panoramic views, and exploring the Estufa Fria: a botanical garden filled with exotic plants, streams, waterfalls, and flowers.

Restaurante Eleven
At the top of this park you'll also find the renowned Restaurante Eleven. Awarded a Michelin star, it opened its doors in 2004 and has become a benchmark for gourmet dining in Lisbon. It's an incredible experience you won't want to miss.

Who was the Marquês de Pombal?
Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, better known as the Marquês de Pombal, was a liberal nobleman, brilliant statesman, and one of the most charismatic figures in Portuguese history. Born in Lisbon on May 13, 1699, he also served as Prime Minister to King José I from 1750 to 1777.
Understanding his importance in Portuguese history is not difficult. Pombal oversaw major economic and financial reforms, abolished slavery in certain colonies, reorganized the kingdom, reformed the University of Coimbra, and transformed Portugal into a modern state.
He was also the father of the Denominação de Origem Controlada (DOC) designation for Port wine, and one of his most far-reaching achievements was the rebuilding of Lisbon in 1755, following the devastating earthquake that struck the city.
It also contributed the grid street pattern of the Baixa and even the elegance of the Praça do Comércio.
For all this and more, the way Lisbon chose to honor such a remarkable figure in the city's history was by erecting a statue of him and naming the square in his memory.
How to Get There
Marquês de Pombal Square has an important metro station of the same name, served by the yellow and blue lines. The blue line connects to important Lisbon landmarks such as Avenida da Liberdade, the Elevador de Santa Justa, Praça do Comércio, and Rossio Square, another of Lisbon's most important and central squares.
It is also one of the stops on the Lisbon hop-on hop-off bus, as well as several regular bus lines.
