Transportation in Lisbon
How to get around Lisbon and its surroundings.
Lisbon's public transportation connects all the most important places to visit.
The metro, buses, and trams all work with the Viva Viagem card, which you can buy at the stations. You can also pay on board buses and trams, but it's more expensive. So we recommend picking up the card as soon as you arrive at the airport.
The card costs €0.50 and you can load it with single trips or use "zapping" (adding credit that gets deducted with each journey).
With the Viva Viagem card, a metro or bus ride costs €1.50; without it, €2.00. Paying on board the tram costs €3.00, while using the card brings it down to €1.50.

Lisbon Metro
The Lisbon Metro connects several key points across the city. As in any major city, it's a great way to avoid traffic and get quickly from one place to another. Each ride is around €1.50.
Trams
A mode of transport highly romanticized by tourists and essential for some locals in neighborhoods like Graça and Estrela and Campo de Ourique, which are not served by the metro. There are several routes, including one designed exclusively for visitors.
Santa Justa Elevator
This elevator connects the lower part of the city center (Baixa) with Largo do Carmo in Chiado. Locals don't use it — it's essentially a monument and tourist attraction. There is a viewpoint at the top.
