Bairro da Graça
Lisbon Character and Tradition
Graça
Graça is a beautiful and traditional area of Lisbon, situated next to Alfama and the hill of São Jorge Castle.
The name Graça, as you might already imagine, translates literally to grace — something its streets have in abundance.

It has a strong Lisbon character, retains traditional local shops, and its ambient sounds blend the squeal of the tram passing over the tracks with the chatter of neighbors talking in the square and on the terraces.

In this neighborhood, built after the great Lisbon Earthquake, old houses belonging to locals born and raised here stand side by side with those of families who fell in love with the city from other parts of the world and came to stay. As well as traditional restaurants and affordable ones where you can sample the local cuisine.

What to See in Graça
Graça is a great place to sit back in the late afternoon with a glass of wine and views over central Lisbon. It has two beautiful viewpoints, the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte and the Miradouro da Graça. At the second, there is a kiosk bar where you can order a coffee or a glass of wine and enjoy it with views over the city center, the São Jorge Castle and the river.
Next to the Miradouro da Graça you will find the Convento de Nossa Senhora da Graça and the Igreja da Graça.

The neighborhood has a small main street, Rua da Graça, where most of the shops are located. There are several cafés and restaurants and a couple of supermarkets.
It is an area we recommend for staying, although the nearest metro station is Santa Apolónia (1.2 kilometers away) and the 15-minute walk is uphill. The other alternative for getting to and from the center is to take bus number 734 or Tram 28E. Both stop at Largo da Graça.
Compared to Bairro Alto or Chiado, Graça is a very quiet neighborhood. It is ideal if you want to sleep in . Keep it in mind when searching for accommodation.
Bear in mind that if you search for hotels in this area, Booking lists it as São Vicente, a small area between Alfama and Graça whose streets blend into both neighborhoods.
