The Lisbon National Pantheon it is a unique monument in Portuguese Baroque architecture.
The building has a long history of delays, reconstructions, and restorations. Construction began nearly 290 years ago and was barely completed in 1966.
Before becoming a pantheon it was a church, later designated by the republican government of 1916 to serve as the pantheon of national heroes.
It is said that the church of St. Peter's in Rome was the inspiration for its final appearance.

The National Pantheon of Lisbon is the resting place of several prominent Portuguese figures, including Amália Rodrigues , the greatest fado singer in Portugal, whose tomb is always adorned with flowers, many sent by visitors still living who were her friends.
Also laid to rest here are the remains of important figures from military and republican history, several presidents, and the writers Almeida Garrett, Guerra Junqueiro, and Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen.
In the beautiful Central Nave stand the cenotaphs of Prince Henry the Navigator, Vasco da Gama, and Luís de Camões.
