Lisbon's Iconic Liqueur
Ginjinha
If you're near Rossio Square, you spot a group of people waiting outside a shop, and you notice everyone leaving with a small plastic cup, you've stumbled upon one of the most quintessentially Lisbon things in the Portuguese capital: ginjinha.

What Is Ginjinha?
The ginjinha or Ginja, is a liqueur made with ginja berries (sour cherries), mixed with alcohol (aguardiente) and sugar along with other ingredients. It is a very well-known liqueur in Lisbon, and you can find it mainly in the Baixa.
area. The liqueur is served with a few of the liqueur-soaked cherries placed at the bottom of the glass, but you can ask for it without the cherries if you prefer.
Great Souvenir
If you have friends waiting for you when you return from your trip to Lisbon, don't forget to bring them a bottle of ginjinha as a souvenir. It's one of the most quintessentially Lisbon things to try. For that, we recommend Ginja Sem Rival and Eduardino. Both are located on Rua Portas de Santo Antão, very close to Rossio Square.
According to a Lisbon local friend: "Even though it's typical in several areas (there's some in Alcobaça and Óbidos), for me it's a very Lisbon drink. It's something that, just like pastéis de nata , is recommended to anyone visiting the city."
