Café A Brasileira
Contents [hide]
This café, opened in 1905, is one of the oldest in the city and one of the top attractions in Lisbon. Located in the Chiado, this café is very well known for its iconic statue of Fernando Pessoa on the terrace, where taking a photo next to this Portuguese poet is simply unavoidable.
The origins of Café A Brasileira
When the place first opened, customers received a free bica with every purchase of ground coffee. It is said that the bica, a short strong espresso, was invented right here.
Today its prices are on the expensive side by Lisbon standards. That said, if you want to experience the place, it's worth stepping inside and ordering your coffee at the bar, which is cheaper — and the interior alone is worth the visit, especially for its beautifully carved wooden decor inside.
What to order at A Brasileira
The café also sells the famous Portuguese pastéis de nata , along with a few small bites to keep your energy up for Lisbon's steep walks. Whether out of curiosity or necessity, Café A Brasileira is a must-see on any sightseeing itinerary in Lisbon.
